CNE exam prep, planned by question count
Facts checked against nln.org · Last checked Nov 6, 2026 · Not affiliated with ANCC, ANA, AONL, NLN or AACN.
Study time should follow the question counts. Facilitate Learning alone is 47 items of 130 scored; add learner development and assessment and you have covered nearly two thirds of the score.

Where the scored questions sit
Order your study by count, not by which area feels hardest:
- Facilitate Learning, 47 items: more than a third of what is scored. Teaching strategies, simulation, clinical judgment.
- Learner development and assessment, 18 items each: socialization and support of diverse learners; test design and item analysis.
- Curriculum and program outcomes, 13 items: outcomes, course design, the evaluation plan.
- The four smaller areas, about a quarter together: change agent (9 items) and academic community (9 items) on academic leadership; quality improvement (9 items) and scholarship (7 items) on CQI and scholarship.
Six weeks, area by area
- Week 1, baseline: sit our practice test unprepared and tally misses per area.
- Weeks 2–3, Facilitate Learning: learning theories, active strategies, simulation and debriefing, the clinical judgment model.
- Week 4, learners and assessment: socialization, legal limits on what faculty decide alone, then test blueprints and item statistics until the arithmetic is automatic.
- Week 5, curriculum and the small areas: outcomes and evaluation plans, governance, Boyer's model.
- Week 6, timing: the practice test against the clock, 72 seconds a question, then only your weakest two areas. The NLN self-assessment is half-length and parallel to the blueprint, so it also works as a timing check (exam prep page).
Answering a three-option question
With three options there is less to eliminate and more weight on the one wrong answer that looks right. In educator scenarios that answer is often premature (acting before gathering data), punitive, or outside the faculty role. A workable order for “first action” stems:
- Safety of patients and learners.
- Assess or gather data before changing anything.
- Follow the published policy, syllabus or handbook.
- Meet privately, give specific feedback, document.
- Escalate through the program's chain: course lead, then director or dean.
This order is a prep convention drawn from published sample items, not a published rule.
Four options means an older set
If a practice set shows four options per question, it predates the current form. The content may still help; the elimination feel will not match a form where every question has three options.
What NLN recommends reading
The candidate handbook lists its resources on pp. 13–14 (handbook). The ones that map most directly onto the blueprint:
- Billings and Halstead, Teaching in Nursing: A Guide for Faculty, 7th ed., 2024: the broadest single book.
- Oermann and Gaberson, Evaluation and Testing in Nursing Education, 6th ed., 2021: test blueprints, item analysis, clinical evaluation.
- Halstead, NLN Core Competencies for Nurse Educators: A Decade of Influence, 2019: the competencies the areas are built on.
- Iwasiw, Andrusyszyn and Goldenberg, Curriculum Development in Nursing Education, 4th ed., 2020.
- Bastable, Nurse as Educator, 6th ed., 2023.
NLN states that it does not endorse or collaborate on any outside prep product, this site included (NLN exam prep page).
Material that is out of date
- Exam size and format: the current form is 150 questions with three options; sets of 100 or with four options are older.
- Area names: “Function within the Educational Environment” is the older name of area 8, still used on NLN's renewal forms; the 2023 blueprint calls it the organizational environment and academic community.
- Simulation standards: INACSL renamed its standards the Healthcare Simulation Standards of Best Practice in 2021; the 2016 “Standards of Best Practice: Simulation” title is superseded.
- Curriculum standards: AACN's 2008 and 2011 Essentials were replaced by the competency-based 2021 Essentials.
- Pass rate quoted as first-time: the published figure counts all registrations.

CNE prep, quick answers
How hard is the CNE?
In 2025, 74% of registrations passed. First-time candidates are not reported separately, so it is not a first-time rate.
Does a good self-assessment score mean I will pass?
Not by itself. The self-assessment has rationales and a score report but no passing score, and the pass mark on the real exam varies by form.
Which book should I open first?
Billings and Halstead for breadth, then Oermann and Gaberson for the assessment area, where the arithmetic and the vocabulary have to be exact.

Each figure is reread against its document on a fixed cycle, and the date beside a source is its latest pass. Where a number here and the document part ways, the document wins (how corrections happen).
