ANCC certification renewal, what counts and when

Facts checked against nursingworld.org, codeofethics.ana.org and 6 more sites · Last checked Nov 6, 2026 · Not affiliated with ANCC, ANA, AONL, NLN or AACN.

Every five years an ANCC credential needs continuing education, one completed professional development activity and a fee, all filed before the expiry date. Most renewal advice online is written for nurse practitioners. This page is for nurse leaders, staff educators and informatics nurses, whose rules are simpler in one way (no pharmacology hours); like every ANCC credential since January 14, 2026, they count only activities inside the current cycle.

The requirement in full

Under the current renewal handbook (effective September 10, 2025, version 2 of February 10, 2026, pp. 6–7), a renewal needs:

  • a current, active RN license;
  • 75 contact hours of continuing education related to the certification's role or specialty, at least 60 of them formally approved or accredited (accredited nursing CE, AMA PRA Category 1 credit or jointly accredited activities); repeated courses are not accepted;
  • one of the eight professional development categories below, completed in full;
  • the renewal fee.

Renewal applications open a year before the expiry date and close on it.

The eight categories

One category, done completely, is enough (handbook pp. 7–15):

  1. Continuing education: the 75 hours themselves, all related to the specialty.
  2. Academic credit: 5 semester or 6 quarter credits of related coursework.
  3. Presentations: first-time presentations totaling 5 clock hours as the primary presenter. Lectures your job requires, and repeats, do not count.
  4. Project, publication or research: an evidence-based practice or quality improvement project, a publication, or research, started and finished in the renewal period.
  5. Precepting: at least 120 hours precepting students in an academic program or in a formal fellowship, residency or internship. Precepting new staff through orientation does not count.
  6. Professional service: two or more consecutive years of volunteer service with a health care organization, such as a board, committee, editorial board or task force.
  7. Practice hours: at least 1,000 hours in the specialty within the five years before you apply.
  8. Assessment: retaking and passing the same exam. Not available for credentials on the renewal-only list.

Which categories suit which role

Examples of how the categories map onto the work behind each credential; the handbook decides what is accepted:

  • Nurse managers and executives: a unit or system QI project (category 4), a seat on a professional board or committee for two years (category 6), or 1,000 leadership practice hours (category 7).
  • Staff educators: presenting is the obvious route, but classes taught as part of the job are excluded; a first-time conference session counts. Precepting counts in a formal residency or fellowship, not in unit orientation.
  • Informatics nurses: an EBP or QI project built around a system change, or practice hours in an informatics role.

The topics of the continuing education must fit the specialty: leadership and management for executives, NPD for staff educators, informatics for informatics nurses.

No pharmacology hours for these four

The 25 pharmacology hours inside the 75 apply only to nurse practitioner and CNS credentials. Leaders, NPD and informatics nurses do not need them, whatever practitioner-focused renewal guides suggest.

The in-cycle rule since January 14, 2026

Since January 14, 2026, every renewal activity has to be earned inside your own five-year certification period, before you file (handbook p. 6). Hours from before the cycle started, or carried over from a previous renewal, are refused. The renewal page suggests logging activities in your online account as you complete them and keeping the certificates in case of audit.

Deadlines, lapses and reactivation

  • No grace period, no backdating. A credential not renewed by its expiry date has lapsed (p. 15).
  • Lapsed less than two years: reactivate by meeting the renewal requirements in force when you apply and paying the fees (p. 19).
  • Lapsed more than two years: you must also pass the exam again, where it still exists. A renewal-only credential lapsed two years or more cannot be reactivated.

The handbook that applies from February 1, 2027

A new renewal handbook was published in July 2026 for applications submitted on or after February 1, 2027; earlier applications use the current one. On our reading of it:

  • the 75 accredited or formally approved hours stay, all inside the five-year period;
  • the eight categories become three pathways, each finished with one activity: additional continuing education (75 more hours, academic credit convertible); practice (1,000 practice hours, 120 preceptor hours or 120 volunteer service hours); scholarship (an EBP or QI project, 5 hours of presentations, a publication or research);
  • retaking the exam is not among the pathways.

If you will submit on or after February 1, 2027, plan your activity against the new pathways.

The other two bodies on this site run shorter or different cycles. AONL's manager and executive credentials renew every three years, by 45 hours of eligible professional development or by retesting. At NLN, the CNE renews every five years by renewal credits mapped to the NLN competencies or by exam, the CNEcl also runs five years (we have not confirmed its renewal method), and the novice credential expires after three years with no renewal route. Details per exam: CNML renewal, CNE renewal.

Keeping a credential current

Renewal questions from leaders and educators

Do nurse executives need pharmacology hours to renew?

No. Pharmacology hours apply to nurse practitioner and CNS credentials only.

Can hours from before my current certification period count?

Not since January 14, 2026: activities have to fall inside your own five-year period.

Is there a grace period after my credential expires?

No. Within two years of lapsing you can reactivate on the requirements in force at that time; after two years you also retest, if the exam is still offered.

Which handbook applies to my renewal?

Whichever is current when you submit: the present handbook before February 1, 2027, the 2027 handbook on or after it.
