Nursing leadership certification, matched to the role

Six board exams cover most of what a nurse leader or nurse educator is asked to certify in: two set by the American Nurses Credentialing Center for managers and executives, one from the American Organization for Nursing Leadership, one each for hospital educators and informatics nurses, and the National League for Nursing's exam for faculty. Each body decides who may sit, so the place to start is the job you hold now.

Six exams, one question apiece

Question 1 of 6 · NE-BC · Human Resource Management · 32%

An eligible RN with chronic migraines asks to use FMLA leave one or two days at a time when attacks occur. Which statement is correct?

  1. Job protection does not depend on how the leave is taken; restoration and anti-interference rights apply to intermittent days just as to a continuous block.
  2. This reverses the rule: bonding leave after a birth or placement is the kind that may be taken intermittently only with the employer's agreement, while medically necessary leave needs no such agreement.
  3. FMLA lets an eligible employee take leave for a serious health condition intermittently or on a reduced schedule when medically necessary; each day off counts against the 12-week entitlement.
  4. This treats FMLA like a fixed leave of absence. The regulations (29 CFR 825.202) expressly allow intermittent and reduced-schedule leave for a serious health condition.
Question 2 of 6 · NEA-BC · Leadership · 34%

The board asks the CNO to draft an emergency succession plan covering a sudden, unplanned vacancy in the CNO role. What must the plan specify above all?

  1. Naming one interim leader and spelling out the authority delegated to that person is what keeps decisions flowing the day the CNO role is suddenly empty.
  2. A ranked list of external candidates serves the permanent search, which comes after the vacancy is covered; it leaves the organization without a leader on day one.
  3. A salary range is a recruiting detail for the permanent replacement and does nothing to keep operations led during the vacancy.
  4. Dividing the CNO's duties equally among directors spreads accountability so thin that no one person can make or own an executive decision.
Question 3 of 6 · CNML · Communication and Relationship Building · 25%

The nurse manager plans to give feedback to a nurse who spoke sharply to a nursing assistant at the nurses' station. Using the situation-behavior-impact model, which statement is BEST?

  1. Asking the nurse to be "more professional" is a vague character label with no situation or behavior attached, the most common way feedback turns into criticism the listener cannot act on.
  2. Calling the nurse rude and then offering praise mixes a judgment with a compliment; this feedback-sandwich habit blurs the message and still names no observable behavior.
  3. Relaying what "several people" say is secondhand and unspecific, so the nurse hears gossip rather than a behavior the nurse can examine or correct.
  4. This names the place and time, the observable behavior (a raised voice) and its effect on the assistant, which is exactly the situation-behavior-impact sequence and gives the nurse something concrete to change.
Question 4 of 6 · CNE · Facilitate Learning · 47 items

Many learners cannot afford the required textbook and are falling behind in the readings. Which action by the nurse educator is most appropriate?

  1. Open or library-licensed texts of equal quality remove the cost barrier for every learner, so the fix targets the structural cause rather than the individual learner.
  2. Exempting only the learners who cannot pay lowers expectations for them and leaves them less prepared. It treats a cost barrier as a reason to teach less.
  3. Replacing the readings with in-class summaries turns class time into content delivery and still leaves learners without the source material.
Question 5 of 6 · NPD-BC · Educational Process Standards · 26%

Nurses' cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) skills decline within months of their biennial certification course. Which approach is most appropriate to maintain skill quality?

  1. Quarterly practice on feedback manikins combines spaced sessions with hands-on practice and real-time feedback, which keeps compression quality from decaying between courses.
  2. Quarterly video review of CPR guidelines is spaced but passive; watching a video gives no psychomotor practice or feedback on compressions.
  3. An annual full-day recertification course is massed practice spaced a year apart, so skills still decay in the months between sessions.
  4. An annual mock code on each unit is useful team practice, but once a year is too infrequent to prevent individual skill decay.
Question 6 of 6 · NI-BC · Foundations of Practice · 36%

An informatics nurse must choose between two published pressure injury prevention guidelines to build into nursing decision support. Which tool is designed to appraise guideline quality?

  1. PRISMA is a checklist for reporting systematic reviews and meta-analyses; choosing it confuses a guideline with the evidence synthesis that may sit behind it.
  2. SQUIRE 2.0 is a reporting guideline for quality improvement studies, so it fits a QI write-up, not the appraisal of a published care guideline.
  3. CONSORT tells authors what to report about a randomized controlled trial; it says nothing about whether a practice guideline was developed soundly.
  4. AGREE II (Appraisal of Guidelines for Research and Evaluation) rates a clinical practice guideline's rigor, stakeholder involvement, and editorial independence, which is exactly what is needed before a guideline is encoded into decision support.

Certification, not a certificate

A university certificate in nursing leadership is coursework; a board certification is an exam set by a certifying body, with an eligibility check before you sit and a renewal cycle after you pass. This site covers the second kind.

The exams fall into three groups:

  • Leadership and management: NE-BC and NEA-BC from ANCC, CNML from AONL's credentialing center.
  • Education: CNE from NLN for faculty in nursing programs, NPD-BC from ANCC for staff educators in health care organizations.
  • Informatics: NI-BC from ANCC.

Which credential fits which role

Each row is a role; each column is the body that certifies it. A cell holds an exam only where that body's eligibility rules are written for the role.

What sits behind each cell, in short:

  • Manager: CNML wants a bachelor's (at least one of your degrees in nursing) and 2,080 hours as a nurse manager, or 4,160 in a leadership support role. The unit-level exam of the American Nurses Credentialing Center asks for a BSN or higher in nursing and 2,000 hours of unit leadership in the last 3 years.
  • CNO or organization-wide director: NEA-BC needs a graduate degree and 2,000 hours with responsibility for the whole organization or system. A director of one department or a group of units fits the unit-level exam instead. AONL's executive exam, CENP, asks for a master's with 4,160 hours in an executive or senior nursing role, or a BSN with 8,320.
  • CNL is a credential for graduates of a CNL master's program. It certifies a point-of-care leader, not a nurse manager.
  • Faculty: CNEn covers the first three years of teaching and is not renewable; CNE follows. CNEcl, the clinical-teaching version, does not require a graduate degree.
  • Staff educator: NPD-BC counts 2,000 hours of nursing professional development practice in the last 3 years, on top of a BSN.
  • Informatics: NI-BC asks for a nursing bachelor's and informatics practice hours.

The four leadership exams all count hours already worked in a leadership role, so for a new manager or director the title comes first and the credential later. The side-by-side for the leadership group is on the nurse executive certification comparison; for educators, the educator credentials compared.

Fees are non-member prices; members of ANA, AONL or NLN pay less, as each exam's cost page shows. Pass rates for the ANCC and AONL exams are first-time candidates; NLN's CNE figure is the share of all 2025 registrations that passed, so it does not compare directly.

Before you choose an exam

Which nursing leadership certification suits a new nurse manager?

Neither leadership exam is open on day one: CNML wants 2,080 hours as a nurse manager, NE-BC 2,000 hours of unit leadership in the last 3 years. Once you have them, CNML is the shorter AONL exam and NE-BC the ANCC one; both are written for unit-level leaders.

Is there a certification for directors of nursing and CNOs?

Yes: ANCC's NEA-BC for leaders with organization-wide or system-wide responsibility, and AONL's CENP for executive and senior nursing roles. NEA-BC needs a graduate degree; CENP accepts a BSN with twice the executive hours. A director of one department or a group of units fits NE-BC instead.

Is the clinical nurse leader (CNL) a manager credential?

No. The CNL is earned by graduates of a CNL master's or post-master's program and certifies a point-of-care clinical leader. Nurse managers look at CNML or NE-BC.

Do nurse educators in hospitals take the CNE?

Usually not. The CNE is written for faculty in academic nursing programs; staff educators in health care organizations take NPD-BC, which counts nursing professional development hours.
