Who sits for it
The CNE is for academic nurse educators: faculty who teach students in a school of nursing, whether in class, the skills lab, simulation, clinical rotations or online. To apply you need an unencumbered RN license and a graduate degree in nursing, plus either an education focus in that degree (or added education coursework) or recent employment in an academic nursing program. The two routes are set out on eligibility.
If you teach employed nurses in a hospital (orientation, competency validation, continuing education), the closer match is ANCC's NPD-BC. The four educator credentials are compared on nurse educator certifications, and the degree path is on how to become a nurse educator. The same body also runs the CNEcl for academic clinical educators and the CNEn for novice educators; neither has its own page here yet.
A naming note: in nursing, “CNE” also stands for continuing nursing education, the contact hours you earn at conferences. On this site it means only the certification.
5 sample questions across the content areas
Question 1 of 5 · Function as a Change Agent and Leader · 9 items
During a SWOT analysis before a curriculum overhaul, the committee lists several findings. Which finding should be classified as an opportunity?
A placement shortage is external but harmful, which makes it a threat. The trap is calling every outside factor an opportunity.
Faculty expertise is internal and helpful, so it is a strength. Treating it as an opportunity mixes up the internal and external halves of SWOT.
A partner's new grant comes from outside the program and can help it, so it is an opportunity: external and favorable.
Question 2 of 5 · Use Assessment and Evaluation Strategies · 18 items
A learner scores 95% on a therapeutic communication exam but is observed being dismissive toward anxious patients in clinical. In which domain is the learner's gap?
Knowing therapeutic communication but acting dismissively is a gap in attitudes and values, which is the affective domain (Krathwohl).
The 95% exam score shows the knowledge is there. The trap is assuming every performance problem is a knowledge problem.
The psychomotor domain covers hands-on skill performance, and nothing in the scenario points to a physical skill deficit.
Question 3 of 5 · Facilitate Learning · 47 items
In a skills laboratory, learners receive immediate praise and a checklist point for each correct step of a procedure. Which learning theory underlies this approach?
Constructivism has learners build meaning from experience and prior knowledge. A point for each step does not ask them to construct anything.
Immediate praise and a point after each correct step are positive reinforcement that shapes the target behavior, which is operant conditioning.
Humanism centers on learner-directed growth and self-actualization, not on rewarding each correct step.
Question 4 of 5 · Facilitate Learner Development and Socialization · 18 items
A learner tells the nurse educator about a newly diagnosed hearing impairment and asks the educator to wear a microphone during class. Which is the best response?
Faculty should not ask for medical documentation. That evidence goes to disability services, which keeps it confidential.
Disability services reviews the request and issues the approved accommodations, which the educator then implements as written (ADA, Section 504).
An informal deal bypasses the disability services process, leaves no record and does not carry over to other courses. Faculty do not grant accommodations on their own.
Question 5 of 5 · Participate in Curriculum Design and Evaluation of Program Outcomes · 13 items
A nurse educator is drafting end-of-program student learning outcomes for a new BSN program. Which statement is written as a program-level learning outcome?
An end-of-program outcome is broad and integrative: it describes graduate performance across settings once the whole program is complete.
Tying the statement to first-semester content and a low-level verb (list) makes it an early course objective, even when it is worded as a graduate outcome.
A single psychomotor skill is a lesson- or course-level objective, too narrow to describe performance across the whole program.
Your score shows up after the last answer.

NLN, not ANCC
Searches for an “ANCC CNE” are common, but ANCC does not award this credential. NLN's Academic Nurse Educator Certification Program does, so ANCC's fee grid, retest wait and renewal categories do not apply.
Fees, pass rate and renewal in brief
Fee:$525, or $425 for members, as of November 2026; the whole path, retakes included, is on the cost page.
Pass rate:74% of 2025 registrations passed. No separate first-time figure is published.
Renewal: every 5 years, through renewal credits or a retest (how renewal works).
Prep plan: question counts, the official reading list and the traps are on the study guide, and a longer question set is on the practice test.

No. It is awarded by NLN's Academic Nurse Educator Certification Program. ANCC's education credential is the NPD-BC, written for nursing professional development practitioners in health care organizations.
Do I have to be teaching now to qualify for the CNE?
Not if your graduate nursing degree had an education emphasis, or you added a post-master's certificate or graduate education courses. Without that, you need recent employment in an academic nursing program. The exact rule is under eligibility.
What is the difference between the CNE credential and continuing nursing education?
Continuing nursing education means contact hours from approved activities. The CNE credential is an exam-based certification for faculty. Contact hours do count toward renewing the credential, which adds to the confusion.
Is online proctoring an option for the CNE?
Yes. You can test with live online proctoring or at a Meazure Learning test center. If you need testing accommodations, book a test center.
Each figure is reread against its document on a fixed cycle, and the date beside a source is its latest pass. Where a number here and the document part ways, the document wins (how corrections happen).
