Your CNE bill in order
- Exam fee: $525, or $425 for members, as of November 2026, paid with the application.
- Membership: the dues were not shown on the public pages we checked. The membership ID has to be on file when you apply, so join first if you want the member price.
- Moving or withdrawing: a reschedule is $50 with 2 business days' notice; a withdrawal keeps a $100 processing fee. A one-time 90-day extension costs $75 if requested at least 7 business days before the window ends; a no-show or a lapsed window forfeits the fee.
- A second attempt: every retake means a fresh application and the full fee, and you can retest once per quarter. Nothing is discounted.
- The self-assessment (optional): $75 for members, $85 for others, with 65 questions, rationales and 90-day access.
- Renewal: $475 for non-members and lower with membership, due every 5 years.
Three ways the total comes out
- Pass on the first attempt, no membership: one exam fee, $525.
- Pass on the first attempt as a member: $425 plus dues. Membership pays off only if the dues are below the discount on the exam and on renewal combined.
- Running out of window: the one-time extension costs a fraction of a forfeited exam fee, so ask for it in time.
- Pass on the second attempt: two full fees, at least a quarter apart. The self-assessment costs less than a retake, which is the honest case for it.

No. Each attempt is billed at the full fee, $525 or $425 for members as of November 2026.
Does membership pay off on the CNE?

Is the CNE fee refundable if I withdraw?
Only partly: a $100 processing fee is kept, and the request must arrive at least 7 days before your 90-day window ends (fees page).
