Boyer's model of scholarship
Ernest Boyer's Scholarship Reconsidered (Carnegie Foundation, 1990) argued that faculty work counts as scholarship in four forms, not only original research. With examples from nursing education:
Discovery: research that produces new knowledge. A grounded-theory study of how new faculty learn to grade clinical work.
Integration: connecting findings across fields and giving them new meaning. A concept analysis of clinical reasoning that brings scattered nursing studies into one working definition.
Application: using expertise on real problems outside the classroom; Boyer later wrote of a scholarship of engagement. Advising a community college on redesigning its dosage-calculation remediation, then reporting what changed.
Teaching: studying teaching and learning systematically and making it public for peer review. Testing retrieval-practice quizzes in a pharmacology course and presenting the results.
Glassick and colleagues (Scholarship Assessed, 1997) added six standards for judging any of the four: clear goals, adequate preparation, appropriate methods, significant results, effective presentation and reflective critique.
Area 6: quality improvement in the role
NLN's seven tasks for this competency:
active membership in professional nursing and education organizations;
lifelong learning;
using self, peer, learner and administrative evaluation to improve;
keeping current with legal practice and ethical codes in nursing and education;
following health care policy that affects nursing and education;
seeking mentors in the educator role;
self-reflection and self-care.
14 questions on CQI and scholarship
Question 1 of 14 · Pursue Continuous Quality Improvement in the Academic Nurse Educator Role · 9 items
A nurse educator receives course evaluation comments from 120 learners. Which is the first step in using this feedback for continuous quality improvement?
Ratings show where satisfaction is low but not why. Skipping the comments loses the explanations behind the numbers.
CQI starts with analysis. Grouping 120 comments into recurring themes shows which issues are widespread enough to act on.
Reacting to each comment treats isolated opinions as equal to patterns and can pull the course in contradictory directions.

The state board of nursing revises its rule on how many clinical hours may be replaced by simulation. Which action should a nurse educator take?
Board rules carry the force of regulation. Waiting for an outside reviewer to find a problem is not compliance.
The state board of nursing regulates prelicensure programs, so the educator reads the revised rule and checks the program's simulation use against it.
The NCSBN study showed that up to 50% substitution can work under set conditions, but each state board sets its own legal cap.

Which professional development goal for a nurse educator is written most effectively?
The goal has a time frame but no measurable action. 'More effective' cannot be checked.
'Whenever possible' sets no target, no measure and no deadline, so nothing tells the educator whether the goal was met.
The goal is specific, measurable and time-bound: a named activity, a countable product and a deadline (SMART).

A nurse educator wants learners to see their exam results quickly. Which method complies with FERPA?
Partial ID numbers are personally identifiable. FERPA guidance rules out posting grades by any part of an ID.
An alphabetical list lets classmates work out whose score is whose, so it still discloses education records.
A private release in the LMS shows each learner only their own score, which is fast and keeps the education record private under FERPA.

A nursing department is establishing a formal peer review of teaching. Which approach would be most effective?
Reviewing materials misses the teaching itself: interaction, pacing and how learners respond.
Peer review supports growth when both sides agree on the criteria, plan the visit together beforehand and debrief it afterward.
Surprise visits with no agreed criteria feel like inspection, produce opinions instead of evidence and erode trust.

A nurse educator is preparing a grant proposal to fund a peer-tutoring program for first-semester learners. Which element would most strengthen the proposal?
Reviewers fund proposals that match their priorities and promise outcomes they can measure.
Vague aims read as an unfocused project and give reviewers nothing to judge feasibility or impact against.
Personal interest shows motivation but not need, method or measurable benefit, which are what proposals are scored on.

A nurse educator surveys learners at three schools to examine the relationship between test anxiety and clinical performance, then publishes the correlations. Which type of scholarship in Boyer's model does this represent?
Collecting original data to answer a new question, here how test anxiety relates to clinical performance, generates new knowledge. That is the scholarship of discovery.
Nothing in the project is being put to practical use for anyone; the educator only measures a relationship and reports it.
The correlations come from data the educator collected, not from combining earlier studies.

After a nurse educator's article is published, the educator finds a calculation error in one table and asks the journal to publish a correction. This action best demonstrates which quality of a scholar?
Correcting one's own published error, even at a cost to reputation, keeps the scholarly record accurate. That is integrity.
Vitality is the enthusiasm and energy for inquiry that draws others in. It does not describe correcting the record.
Perseverance is sustained effort through setbacks. A correction notice is about honesty, not persistence.

A nurse educator has collected quantitative learning-outcome data but is unsure which statistical test is appropriate. Which action best supports scholarly rigor?
Holding back the inferential analysis to avoid mistakes leaves the research question unanswered. The fix is getting the analysis right.
Choosing the test before analysis, with expert help when needed, protects the validity of the conclusions.
Running tests until one is significant inflates false positives and misreports the analysis.
Question 10 of 14 · Pursue Continuous Quality Improvement in the Academic Nurse Educator Role · 9 items
A nurse educator is compiling evidence for accreditation that a revised clinical course improved outcomes. Which evidence is most persuasive?
Describing what changed and what was hoped for documents intentions, not whether outcomes improved.
End-of-course ratings show how learners felt about the course, not whether their competency improved.
Outcome data across cohorts, tied to the timing of the revision, are direct evidence that the change improved learning.

A promotion portfolio includes a published review that synthesizes nursing, psychology and education research on new-graduate turnover, and a clinical program the faculty member built with a hospital to reduce readmissions. Which Boyer classification is correct?
Synthesizing several disciplines' findings is the scholarship of integration. Using expertise with a partner on a real problem is application.
The review is not about teaching, and a program built to solve a partner's problem applies expertise rather than producing new knowledge.
A review generates no new data. Treating every publication as discovery is the classic Boyer mix-up.

A department chair asks to be listed as a coauthor on a manuscript to which the chair contributed only by approving the project. Which response by the lead author is most appropriate?
Authorship requires a substantive intellectual contribution and accountability for the work (ICMJE). Approving a project earns an acknowledgment, not a byline.
The senior last position still claims a contribution the chair did not make, so custom does not justify it.
Honorary authorship is a misrepresentation whatever the byline position. Avoiding conflict does not make it acceptable.

A nurse educator offers ten bonus points in the course to students who complete a survey for the educator's research study. What is the primary ethical concern?
Secure storage matters, but it is a data-handling issue that applies to any study. It is not the specific risk this design creates.
A grade reward from the student's own instructor pressures participation, which compromises voluntary consent. Students are a vulnerable group because of the power imbalance.
Anonymity can be protected with an anonymous survey tool. The deeper problem is that the grade reward pressures students to take part.

A nurse educator is revising a teaching philosophy statement for a promotion dossier. Which content makes the statement most useful?
Naming theories shows familiarity, not how the educator teaches or why.
Course lists belong in the CV or workload section. They say nothing about the educator's beliefs or approach.
A strong teaching philosophy pairs beliefs about teaching and learning with concrete examples of how they show up in the educator's practice.
Your score shows up after the last answer.
Legal points an educator is expected to know
Academic and disciplinary dismissal differ. In Board of Curators v. Horowitz (1978) the Supreme Court held that an academic dismissal needs notice of the deficiencies and a careful, deliberate decision, not a formal hearing. Dismissal for misconduct needs notice and a chance to be heard.
Courts defer to academic judgment unless it departs substantially from accepted academic norms (Regents v. Ewing, 1985). Following the published policy and documenting is how faculty stay there.
Ethics codes: the ANA Code of Ethics is covered once, on the NE-BC ethics page.
Areas 6 and 7, the usual slips
Good teaching is not yet scholarship of teaching. It becomes scholarship when it is studied systematically and made public for peers to review.
Clinical expertise as application. Being an expert clinician is not scholarship by itself; application means bringing that expertise to a defined problem and documenting the result.
Expert clinician, novice educator. Clinical skill does not transfer to teaching on its own; the blueprint expects a new educator to seek mentors.
QI, research or EBP. Telling the three apart is NPD-BC material, on EBP and process improvement; here the question is the educator's own practice.
