To sit for ANCC's informatics board exam you need four things every candidate shares, plus informatics practice hours by one of three routes. A graduate degree is one of those routes, not a requirement.

Four conditions for every candidate
- License: A current, active RN license in a U.S. state or territory, or the legally recognized equivalent in another country.
- Degree: A bachelor's or higher degree in nursing. The word that matters is nursing: a BS in computer science or health information does not satisfy it, even with informatics study on top. An MSN does.
- RN experience: The equivalent of 2 years of full-time practice as a registered nurse. Any practice as a registered nurse counts, informatics roles included; this is separate from the informatics-hour routes below.
- Continuing education: 30 hours of continuing education in informatics nursing within the last 3 years. General nursing CE does not count toward it; the content has to be informatics nursing.
Three ways to show informatics practice
You meet one of these, not all three:
- Practice hours alone: at least 2,000 hours of informatics nursing practice within the last 3 years. Roughly one year of full-time informatics work, or a longer stretch part-time.
- Fewer hours plus graduate credit: at least 1,000 hours of informatics nursing practice in the last 3 years plus at least 12 semester hours of academic credit in informatics courses of a graduate-level informatics nursing program. It suits nurses still working through graduate informatics coursework.
- A graduate program with practicum: a completed graduate program in informatics nursing with at least 200 hours of faculty-supervised practicum in informatics nursing. ANCC accepts an unofficial transcript to review the application and keeps the exam result; certification is issued once the final, degree-conferred official transcript arrives and all other requirements are met, so students near the end of a program can test before the degree is conferred.
Worked cases
- The unit super-user. A staff nurse spends about one shift a week on build testing, training and optimization for two years. At roughly 8 hours a week that is a little over 800 hours: not enough for the hours-alone route. Graduate informatics coursework opens the mixed route (1,000 hours + 12 graduate credits) once the hours pass that mark.
- The full-time clinical analyst. An RN in an EHR analyst role for 14 months, about 40 hours a week, is past 2,000 practice hours in 3 years. With the CE hours in place, the hours-alone route fits.
- The MSN student. A nurse in a graduate informatics nursing program with a supervised practicum applies on an unofficial transcript, tests, and receives the credential when the final transcript arrives.
How ANCC counts any given role is its decision, made on the application. When your hours sit close to a threshold, document them before you apply.
Certification and pay
ANCC publishes no salary data for this credential, and we found no first-source figure that isolates what the letters add to pay. Salary pages for informatics nurses mix analyst, specialist and director titles, so read any single number with the job title in mind. What the credential documents is narrower and certain: board certification in the specialty from ANCC.

NI-BC eligibility, briefly
Can I apply with an associate degree in nursing?
Not for this exam. The degree requirement is a bachelor's or higher in nursing.
Do my informatics hours have to be paid work?
ANCC's page does not say. It asks for hours of informatics nursing practice and names no job titles; if unpaid hours are part of your count, ask ANCC before applying. A supervised graduate practicum has its own route.
What counts toward the informatics CE hours?
Continuing education whose content is informatics nursing, completed within the last three years. Keep the certificates for each activity.

Each figure is reread against its document on a fixed cycle, and the date beside a source is its latest pass. Where a number here and the document part ways, the document wins (how corrections happen).
