An NPD-BC study plan, weighted by the outline
Facts checked against nursingworld.org and codeofethics.ana.org · Last checked Nov 6, 2026 · Not affiliated with ANCC, ANA, AONL, NLN or AACN.
Leadership (27%) and educational process standards (26%) outweigh the other four domains combined. Plan your weeks around that, read from the list ANCC itself publishes, and save ANCC's practice exam for the end.

Eight weeks, in proportion to the weights
The plan assumes five or six hours a week alongside a full-time job. Stretch or compress it, but keep the proportions.
- Weeks 1–2, educational process (26%): learning theories, the design process from gap analysis to evaluation, competency management, contact-hour rules. Pair the reading with the domain I page.
- Weeks 3–4, leadership (27%): the NPD practitioner's roles, precepting and mentoring, group facilitation, consultation, change and resource management (leadership).
- Week 5, ethics, law and regulation (15%): ANA standards and the Code, recognition programs, risk, copyright (domain III).
- Week 6, technology (15%): LMS records, simulation, virtual classrooms, device roll-outs (technology).
- Week 7, project management (11%) with EBP and research (6%): EBP vs QI vs research, evidence levels, charters and critical paths (one page for both).
- Week 8, mixed and timed: the practice test at exam pace, then the Readiness Test if you buy it, then a last pass over your weakest domain.
The certifying body's reading list
A reference list accompanies the current outline. The titles most specific to the specialty:
- Harper (ed.), Core Curriculum for Nursing Professional Development, 6th ed. (ANPD, 2023): the closest thing to a syllabus.
- Harper and Maloney, Nursing Professional Development: Scope and Standards of Practice, 4th ed. (2022): roles, standards and the practice model.
- Harper, Leadership in Nursing Professional Development (2022).
- ANCC's NCPD Accredited Provider Policy and Operations Manual (2023): the contact-hour and educational design rules.
- ANA's Code of Ethics for Nurses in its newest edition, and ANA's Scope and Standards of Practice (4th edition, 2021).
- For research and EBP: Polit and Beck, and Melnyk and Fineout-Overholt.
ANA also sells its own review manual (listed in the cost table), though the certifying body endorses no prep product. ANPD sells review courses and practice exams through its learning site.
What the new outline added and dropped
The current outline came out of a 2024 role delineation study of NPD practice. Topics that older books and banks barely touch: DEI advocacy and psychological safety under Leadership, incident command structures under risk management, virtual education and virtual meetings, device integration and new-technology roll-outs under Technology, and educational neuroscience among the learning theories. Marketing, lateral violence and systems theory are gone as named topics, and communication now sits inside Leadership.
Getting value from the Readiness Test
The official practice exam is the $85 Readiness Test, taken live-proctored at Prometric. Its Readiness Tests page says each purchase shows the same questions, so a second attempt mostly measures memory. Take it once, about a week before test day, as a timed check rather than as study material. For drilling, the practice test here explains every answer choice.
Six traps that recur in NPD questions
- Kirkpatrick levels. A skill shown in the sim lab at the end of class is level 2; the same skill seen on the unit a month later is level 3; fewer infections on the unit is level 4. The four levels in detail.
- "Specialist" is a defined term. ANPD reserves NPD specialist for a certified practitioner with a graduate degree; practitioner vs specialist.
- Contact hours, not CEUs. The NCPD system counts contact hours of 60 minutes; a CEU is a separate IACET unit worth 10 contact hours (ANCC NCPD FAQs).
- Research, EBP or QI. Each starts from a different question; how to tell them apart.
- Two evidence scales. Melnyk and Fineout-Overholt rank evidence in seven levels, Johns Hopkins in five, so a single randomized trial is level II on one scale and level I on the other.
- Critical path. Pick the longest run of tasks that depend on each other, not the shortest; that run fixes the earliest possible finish.

Studying for NPD-BC
Is the Core Curriculum enough on its own?
It is the broadest single title, but ANCC's list also names the NCPD provider manual and research texts, and questions on contact-hour rules or study design draw on those.
Is eight weeks of NPD-BC prep enough?
No official figure exists. Eight weeks is a workable default if you already work in NPD; add time if leadership or research methods are new to you.
Does a commercial review course add much?
No. A course adds structure and a schedule. The reading list, the domain pages and practice questions cover the same outline.

Each figure is reread against its document on a fixed cycle, and the date beside a source is its latest pass. Where a number here and the document part ways, the document wins (how corrections happen).
